What is Taekwon-Do?

Taekwon-Do is a version of unarmed combat designed for the purpose of self-defence. Translated, “Tae” stands for jumping or flying, to kick or smash with the foot. “Kwon” denotes the fist—chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand or fist. “Do” means art or way. Thus meaning the art of hand and foot fighting.

Who was the founder of TKD?

Our founder was General Choi Hong Hi.

Why Taekwon-Do?

Health, Self esteem, stronger mind and body, self control, self defence. Respect for others.

What style of TKD?

Masterton TKD is affiliated to “ITFNZ“, International Taekwon-Do Foundation of New Zealand).  ITFNZ is the New Zealand National Governing Body for the International Taekwon-Do Federation . The International Taekwon-Do Federation is registered in Austria, with it’s head quarters in Vienna.

ITF styles are based on the original ideals and practices as set by the late General Choi Hong Hi, the founder of Taekwon-Do.

What gear do I need?

To start training one only needs to turn up in trackpants and loose shirt / tee shirt.

If after initial trial period,(4 sessions), training uniforms (Dobok), can be purchased through the club. It is recommended that a bottle of water or sports drink and mouth guard be brought to training.Warm clothing for after training.

What is the cost?

The first 2 weeks are free to new students, there after a monthly cost of only $20*(family discounts apply).

An affiliation fee of $30,(subject to alteration 2010), to ITFNZ is payable on commencing your training, and is renewed annually at a reduced cost.*(family discounts apply). This allows you to train, go to seminars and competitions and recieve the ITFNZ magazine.

Doboks (training uniforms), are around $80 dollars, although now and again second hand doboks become available at much reduced prices.

A one off fee of $6 is asked for the purchase of a (kup), grading requirement folder.

Club badges are also available to attach to uniforms or other clothing. Price $10each

How does one advance?

Advancement through the grades is by way of a grading test whereby an examiner tests the students abilities and if passed they move to the next level.

Grades are:

White belt – 10th Kup

White belt / yellow stripe – 9th Kup

Yellow belt – 8th Kup

Yellow belt / green stripe – 7th Kup

Green belt – 6th Kup

Green belt / blue stripe – 5th Kup

Blue belt – 4th Kup

Blue belt / red stripe – 3rd Kup

Red belt – 2nd Kup

Red belt / black stripe – 1st Kup

Black belt – 1st Dan

2nd Dan to 9th Dan
